The Intimate Knowledge of God

“For I always pray to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the deep and intimate knowledge of Him….” -Eph. 1.17 (amp.)

The apostle Paul was jealous for the saints to come into the knowledge of God in an intimate manner. He was not content to see them filled with accurate understanding only. His desire was that they would encounter the love and purity of God by the power of the Spirit. There is nothing more precious than receiving a felt revelation of God’s great kindness, being touched by the fear of the Lord, or sharing in His burdens for Israel and the nations.

Being in touch with the Lamb of God intimately will change everything in our views and dispositions. Hear Oswald Chambers on this:

When once we get intimate with Jesus we are never lonely, we never need sympathy, we can pour out all the time without being pathetic. The saint who is intimate with Jesus will never leave impressions of himself, but only the impression that Jesus is having unhindered way, because the last abyss of his nature has been satisfied by Jesus. The only impression left by such a life is that of strong calm sanity that Our Lord gives to those who are intimate with Him.

There is nothing in the world to equip the soul for life and godliness like the life of abiding intimacy with God. Encountering the Lord by His Spirit and through His word becomes the life-bread of the redeemed soul, and there is no greater joy than turn to Him in the secrecy of the heart, no matter how dry one might be. There is a well-spring of goodness and purity in the experience of intimacy with God, and all of the quirks and idiosyncracies that we’ve developed over the years are leveled and cleared in that place alone.

Today, let your fears, anxieties, jealousies, compromises, and strivings fall by wayside. Come to Him with desire to share in His life and death, and all things will be made new by the power of the intimate knowledge of God.

  1. I have been a Christian all my life yet for most of it I was holding onto my dreams & desires. My life was about what I wanted–about what I believed I needed for happiness. When I didn’t see God providing for the things I believed He should to give me happiness, my trust in Him diminished and it was hard to grasp hold of how deeply He loves me.

He sent an “earthquake” into my life and when I was at the end of my rope in with all my pursuing and striving to find happiness, I was at a point He could touch me with His unfailing love. It was at this point that I developed a the kind of intimate relationship that you have written about.

When my deepest desire became to know Him and to become one with Him, I finally found the peace & joy I had been missing in my relationship with Him before.

I am one who can say with all my heart and soul that these words you write are truth!

    Thanks for the posting.
